Tesla Unveils First Model Y ‘Juniper’ at Giga Berlin

Tesla has reportedly built the first Model Y “Juniper” at its Gigafactory Berlin, according to employees at the plant.

This special vehicle will remain within the factory and will be signed by all 12,000 Tesla workers at the facility.

New Model Y Design Expands to Europe

Last Thursday, Tesla unveiled a refreshed Model Y design, initially launching it in China, Australia, and other nearby markets.

For example, Model Y orders in the Philippines are automatically being updated to the new “Juniper” design.

However, Tesla had not revealed when the updated Model Y would reach markets outside Asia and the South Pacific—until now.

Giga Berlin Begins Production

According to a report from German media outlet Handelsblatt, managers at Tesla’s Giga Berlin informed employees that production of the new Model Y would begin as early as this week.

It appears the first unit has already been built as part of a trial run. Tesla plans to keep this vehicle at the factory, allowing all 12,000 employees to sign it.

A post on X (via Google Translate) stated:

“The first model that was shown to us yesterday is ready today to be decorated with 12,000 signatures. This will be honored.”

What’s Next for the Model Y?

Tesla has not yet officially confirmed the production of the new Model Y at Giga Berlin.

Additionally, the company has not opened orders for the updated design in Germany or other European markets.

The delay is probably because Tesla needs to train workers on the new production process.

According to Handelsblatt, the company updated its manufacturing lines during the holiday break to prepare for the new Model Y.

Europe Gets the Model Y First

The updated Model Y will launch in Europe before it arrives in the U.S.

Tesla’s decision to roll out the updated Model Y in Europe first isn’t surprising. The company has been doubling down on its international markets lately.

Meanwhile, in the U.S., the Model Y continues to lead as the top-selling electric vehicle.

However, 2024 saw a 6.6 percent drop in sales compared to 2023. Tesla has been clear about its priorities—its next-generation platform is taking center stage, which has impacted production and sales across the board.
