The Cybertruck introduced many new technologies for Tesla. While the refreshed Model Y didn’t include these features, Tesla’s Q4 2024 earnings call revealed that future vehicles will use some of the Cybertruck’s tech.
Here’s what’s staying exclusive to the Cybertruck and what’s coming to other Tesla models.
Cybertruck-Only Features
Some features will remain unique to the Cybertruck:
- Stainless Steel Exoskeleton: The Cybertruck’s strong, heavy stainless steel body is designed for a truck. It’s unlikely to appear in other vehicle types soon, unless Tesla plans a CyberSUV.
- Air Bending Manufacturing: This process shapes the stainless steel without touching it.
Cybertruck Tech Coming to Future Models
Many Cybertruck features will be used in upcoming Tesla vehicles, like the Cybercab, next-gen models, and possibly a Tesla bus.
These were left out of the Model Y refresh for simplicity but will likely define Tesla’s future.
Manufacturing & Design
- Giga Castings: The Cybertruck uses a 9,000-ton press for front and rear structures, reducing parts and assembly complexity. This makes repairs easier and cuts costs.
- Integrated Audio with Body Structure: The Cybertruck’s body channels sound from subwoofers to audio quality for passengers.
Powertrain and Electrical Systems
- 48-Volt Electrical Architecture: This system reduces wiring costs, heat, and weight while improving energy efficiency.
- 800-Volt Battery System: Higher voltage improves efficiency for larger vehicles, enabling faster charging (up to 325kW now, with 500kW coming soon).
- Etherloop Communication: A new standard for low-voltage wiring that simplifies diagnostics and repairs.
- Bi-Directional Charging (Powershare): Tesla confirmed this feature will come to other vehicles. It lets cars power homes, tools, or equipment during outages or off-grid trips.
Ride and Comfort
- Custom Laminated Glass: Reduces noise and blocks UV rays, keeping the cabin cooler.
- Adaptive Air Suspension: Offers up to 12 inches of ground clearance and a smoother ride, especially on rough terrain.
- Steer-by-Wire: Replaces the traditional steering column with an electronic system that adjusts based on speed.
- Rear Wheel Steering: Improves turning at low speeds and stability at high speeds.
