September 2024 marked another milestone in Norway’s electric vehicle (EV) revolution, with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounting for an astounding 96.4% of all passenger car sales. Out of 12,966 total passenger car sales, 12,495 were BEVs, according to the latest data.
Tesla particularly shined in the Norwegian market last month, securing more than 4,000 registrations. The American automaker celebrated this achievement on its official Tesla Europe & Middle East social media account on X, stating that every third car registered in Norway in September 2024 was a Tesla. This claim is substantiated by official figures, which show Tesla registering a total of 4,210 vehicles in Norway during the month.
Norway’s Road Traffic Information Council (OFV) reported that September 2024 set new records for the country’s EV sector. Year-to-date, the share of electric vehicles has reached approximately 88%, edging closer to Norway’s political goal of having all new passenger cars be zero-emission vehicles from January 1, 2025.
OFV Director Øyvind Solberg Thorsen commented on the progress:
“We have loyally followed the authorities’ call to buy electric cars rather than diesel and petrol cars. With an electric car share of over 96% of new car sales in September, the 2025 target may be within reach.”
The OFV highlighted that Norway’s exceptional EV sales in September were bolstered by a large shipment of Teslas arriving during the month. This influx resulted in Tesla’s Model Y crossover and Model 3 sedan dominating the country’s auto sector. The Model Y led with 2,107 registrations, closely followed by the Model 3 with 2,067 registrations, making them the best and second-best-selling vehicles in Norway for September.
The gap between Tesla’s offerings and their competitors was significant. The third best-selling vehicle, the Volvo EX30, registered 803 units. The Skoda Enyaq and Toyota bZ4X rounded out the top five with 702 and 659 registrations, respectively.
As Norway races towards its 2025 zero-emission goal, September’s figures demonstrate the country’s unwavering commitment to electric mobility, with Tesla leading the charge in this rapidly evolving market.
