DHL has recently shared promising results from its Tesla Semi trial, validating the electric truck’s capabilities after a comprehensive two-week testing period. The logistics giant, which initially ordered 10 Tesla Semis in 2017, finally got hands-on experience with the vehicle in summer 2023.
During the trial based out of Livermore, California, DHL Supply Chain USA:
- Covered 3,000 miles (5,000 km) in normal operations
- Completed a long-haul trip of 390 miles (625 km) fully loaded
- Operated at 75,000 pounds (34 metric tons) gross combined weight
- Confirmed the promised 500-mile single-charge range
- Achieved an impressive efficiency of 1.72 kWh/mile at average speeds over 50 mph (80 km/h)
The efficiency results actually exceeded both DHL’s expectations and Tesla’s own ratings, with Tesla now claiming even better efficiency at 1.6 kWh per mile. This level of efficiency is particularly significant for operational costs, as 1.7 kWh of electricity can cost as little as $0.15, potentially leading to substantial cost savings in trucking operations.
Following the successful trial, DHL has indicated it’s “ready to roll” with Tesla Semi integration in its US operations. While Tesla plans to expand Semi availability to Europe, where DHL has larger operations, the immediate focus is on ramping up production at their Nevada factory for next year.
