Tesla is giving U.S. buyers a free upgrade on eligible Model 3 and Model Y inventory vehicles, with the offer ending February 2.
The incentive lets customers take the highest‑priced paid option already fitted to a specific inventory car without paying extra, which can trim up to $2,000 from the effective cost. This applies only to vehicles listed in existing U.S. inventory, and Tesla notes that availability depends on local stock and may run out before the deadline.
What the free upgrade covers
The free upgrade centers on options that usually carry a noticeable premium. In many cases, this includes paint colors such as Ultra Red or Quicksilver, both commonly listed at about $2,000. It can also include the Black and White interior, which tends to add around $1,000 to the price.
Standard colors like Stealth Grey, Solid Black and Deep Blue Metallic usually add around $1,300-$2,000 to the base price, while Pearl White is often the no‑cost default. So if an inventory car already has an expensive color or interior, that cost is now waived under this promotion. The online inventory pages factor this in automatically, so the listed price already reflects the free option, without further negotiation.
Tesla is not relying on the upgrade alone. The company is combining this offer with other incentives aimed at U.S. buyers of the Model 3 and Model Y.
For some trims, Tesla is promoting 0% APR financing for up to 72 months, which removes interest charges over the life of the loan. This can save several thousand dollars compared with a standard auto loan at today’s rates.
Tesla is also running a time‑limited Full Self‑Driving (Supervised) transfer program for existing owners. Customers who already paid for Enhanced Autopilot or FSD can move that software to a new vehicle if they place an order by March 31, under set conditions. Tesla says, this is the last such transfer window before FSD moves to a subscription‑only model and new outright purchases stop.
For buyers who were already considering a Model 3 or Model Y, this period offers notable financial advantages. A buyer who picks an inventory Model Y with Ultra Red paint and a Black and White interior effectively gets those upgrades at no cost, which removes roughly $3,000 in option charges. If that purchase is paired with 0% financing, the total savings over a normal loan can climb much higher over several years.
State and local incentives, where they still apply, can stack on top of Tesla’s offers and push the total benefit into five figures. Yet some buyers may still decide to wait.
The clock is ticking on the free upgrade itself. The company has stated that the offer ends on February 2 and applies only to eligible U.S. inventory vehicles while stock lasts. After that date, buyers should expect to pay the usual price for premium paint, interior choices or other top‑tier options on the Model 3 and Model Y.
