Tesla has expanded its energy storage footprint in Texas with the activation of a new 125MW/250MWh Megapack installation in the northern part of the state. The project, managed by Tesla’s Autobidder system, will work in conjunction with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to enhance grid stability and manage increasing power demands.

Project Highlights

  • Capacity: 125MW/250MWh
  • Location: North Texas
  • Operator: Tesla’s Autobidder system
  • Partner: Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT)
  • Primary functions: Grid stabilization and load growth management

Expanding Energy Storage Portfolio

This installation is part of Tesla’s broader energy storage expansion in Texas. The company recently secured contracts for three additional Megapack projects in partnership with Intersect Power, totaling 15.3 GWh of storage capacity. Of this, 966MWh will be located in Texas, with commissioning expected within a year of announcement.

Manufacturing Milestones

Tesla’s Megapack production has reached significant milestones:

  • Recently produced its 10,000th Megapack at the Lathrop, California Megafactory
  • Lathrop facility aims for annual production of 10,000 Megapacks (40 GWh)
  • New Shanghai Megafactory nearing completion
  • Will match Lathrop’s production capacity
  • Expected to begin shipping units in Q1

Record-Breaking Deployment Numbers

Tesla’s energy division has shown remarkable growth in 2024:

  • First nine months: 20.3 GWh of total battery storage deployed
  • Q1: 4.1 GWh
  • Q2: 9.4 GWh
  • Q3: 6.9 GWh
  • Surpassed entire 2023 deployment (14.7 GWh)
  • Includes both Megapack and Powerwall installations

This expansion of Tesla’s energy storage business aligns with CEO Elon Musk’s predictions for 2024, with the division emerging as the company’s highest-margin business segment. The growth rate of Tesla’s energy division is now outpacing its automotive business, marking a significant shift in the company’s revenue streams.
