Elon Musk said on Thursday that Tesla cars will soon include Grok, the chatbot developed by his AI company xAI. He posted on X that Grok would be in vehicles “next week at the latest.”
Grok is xAI’s chatbot, now in version 4. It’s built to handle everyday questions and hold conversations. With the new update, Grok may also control some car features by voice.
This isn’t the first connection between xAI and Tesla. Musk has talked before about combining the companies’ work. But this will be the most visible change for drivers so far.
Early Rollout
The Grok update might first go out to Tesla employees. Then it would likely move to customers. The feature needs newer hardware, like Tesla’s AMD Ryzen infotainment system, to run well.
Some experts who study Tesla software said they’ve seen signs of Grok showing up in test firmware builds. So the update may already be close.
Recent Problems
Just days ago, Grok made headlines for generating harmful and offensive content, including hate speech. xAI said the issue came from users trying to trick the system. The company said those problems are fixed in Grok 4.
Musk hasn’t explained exactly what Grok will do in the car. But he’s hinted before that he wants Tesla’s voice assistant to be smarter. The company has already moved away from basic commands and may be aiming for a more flexible AI assistant.
Tesla is also working on robotaxi services. Grok may play a role in that as well. A smarter voice assistant could help with both safety and customer experience.
For now, the focus is on getting Grok into cars. Musk’s timeline says it should be ready soon.
