Elon Musk says big new Tesla FSD update coming soon

Elon Musk says Tesla is working on a new version of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. He says this update has about ten times more parameters than the current one. If everything goes well in testing, drivers could get it by the end of next month.

Tesla FSD keeps getting better. Some test vehicles in Austin already use an early version, but there’s always a safety monitor in the seat. For now, FSD still needs a driver to pay attention. Musk says a stronger update is next.

During a recent earnings call, Musk said, “We expect to increase the parameter count tenfold. That’s challenging because larger models strain memory bandwidth, but we believe it’s achievable beyond what people are now experiencing.” He posted again on X (formerly Twitter) on August 6. He said Tesla is working on better video compression to help the software.

He wrote: “Tesla is training a new FSD model with ~10× params and a big improvement to video compression loss. Probably ready for public release end of next month if testing goes well.”

A much larger FSD model could help the car read roads and situations better. It could mean smarter choices in traffic. Musk says they need to control memory use so the system runs smoothly. If it works, this could be Tesla’s biggest step yet towards true self-driving.

Stronger FSD software is important for robotaxi service. It could help Tesla offer driverless rides in more places. Right now, some countries want these features. But laws and regulations need to catch up before full robotaxi service can start.

Each update improves the FSD system with more driving data. Tesla uses this to fine-tune its artificial intelligence. The next FSD model may move Tesla closer to real hands-off driving. The company hopes it will help keep them ahead in self-driving technology.
