Tesla grows Robotaxi service area in Austin

Tesla made its Robotaxi service area in Austin, Texas bigger. The company did this early Sunday, August 3, 2025. This move almost doubled the space where people can use the service.

Tesla started Robotaxi rides in Austin on June 22, 2025. At first, the area was about 20 square miles. On July 14, Tesla increased it to around 42 square miles. This latest step boosted it further to about 80 square miles.

This increase means more people in Austin now including places like Barton Creek, can try the Robotaxi for trips between home and city spots. Tesla’s recent tests in West Austin, such as Marble Falls, signal more growth could soon follow.

Tesla and Waymo are close competitors

Waymo began its own driverless ride service in Austin back in March 2025. Tesla’s first increase brought its service area above Waymo’s, but Waymo then grew too. At this point, Waymo covers about 90 square miles. Tesla’s 80-square-mile zone is nearly as large.

This pattern shows both companies are eager to serve more of Austin fast. Each time one grows, the other responds.

Expansion plan and comments

Elon Musk spoke two weeks ago about plans for a larger geofence. He did not say how big it would get. The changes show Tesla thinks the system can handle more neighborhoods, not just city centers.

Tesla says safety is still its main goal. The company may soon offer rides to most of Austin since it has shown it can adjust the geofence quickly.

People in Austin now have more choices for driverless rides. Both Tesla and Waymo will likely add even more areas soon.
