Tesla’s New Model Y Sees Explosive Demand in China Ahead of March Deliveries

The newly updated Tesla Model Y has made a strong debut in China, quickly surpassing the reception of the redesigned Model 3.

According to recent reports, pre-sales for the refreshed Model Y, which began earlier this month, have seen a significant surge in orders.

Tesla Model Y Sales Surge

Chinese news outlet Yicai, citing an insider, reported that the Model Y garnered more than 70,000 orders within just five days of its launch.

Another outlet, Jiemian, noted that orders for the Model Y reached 73,400 by January 15, with 59,000 of those being for the updated version.

Pricing and Variants

Tesla launched the new Model Y in China on January 10, offering two variants.

A rear-wheel-drive version starting at RMB 263,500 and a long-range all-wheel-drive version starting at RMB 303,500.

Deliveries for the updated Model Y are expected to start in March.

What They Are Saying R&D Success

Yicai cited a Tesla China R&D source, who highlighted that the rapid pace of Tesla’s vehicle research and development is a key factor in its ability to compete with established automakers.

The source also emphasized that the new Model Y is a global product, developed in part by Tesla’s China team.

This mirrors the strategy used for the redesigned Model 3, as reported by CNEV Post.

Tesla’s Chinese team reportedly focused on the Model Y’s interior and exterior design, while the U.S. team handled the vehicle’s software and other critical systems.

What’s Next Showroom Rollout

Grace Tao, Tesla’s VP of External Affairs, confirmed on Weibo that show cars of the new Model Y are being deployed to Tesla’s Chinese showrooms.

Social media posts featuring images and videos of the Model Y suggest strong consumer enthusiasm for the all-electric crossover.

Early feedback from automotive reviewers has been largely positive.
