Tesla’s Chief Designer Talks Model Y Colors

Tesla’s Head of Design, Franz von Holzhausen, spoke about the Glacier Blue and Midnight Cherry Red Model Y colors on the 500th episode of the Ride the Lightning podcast. While he didn’t confirm anything directly, his comments gave some insight into Tesla’s approach to these colors.

Glacier Blue for the U.S.?

Right now, Tesla does not offer Glacier Blue for the Model Y in the U.S. Ryan McCaffrey asked von Holzhausen if that might change. Instead of giving a yes or no answer, von Holzhausen explained how the team developed the color.

“Glacier Blue is just a color that we’ve been talking about with our team – the team is like right through that window by the way – and we were looking at the impact of silver, how do we get pigment into silver and really add a little bit of personality to it,”

he said.

“If you look at our palette, you know it was either darks or white, and so we were looking for something in between. Blue is always a fairly popular color.”

Von Holzhausen then added,

“I’m not going to answer that specifically, but if you look at the history of how things evolve and change in the ability to order thing.. you could extrapolate maybe something out of that? I can’t guarantee you either way.”

Right now, Tesla sells Glacier Blue in Asia-Pacific markets. His response leaves the door open for it to come to the U.S. at some point, but there’s no official confirmation.

Midnight Cherry Red’s Future

McCaffrey also asked if the Midnight Cherry Red Model Y color from Gigafactory Berlin was being discontinued. Von Holzhausen kept his answer short.

He said, “I’m not going to answer it,” and told fans to “stay tuned.”

Tesla has not made any announcements about removing the color.
