The latest iteration of Tesla’s Model 3 is quietly setting new standards for electric vehicle efficiency, as revealed by a comprehensive range test conducted by EV enthusiasts Out of Spec Studios.

In a rigorous side-by-side comparison, the re-engineered Tesla Model 3 Long Range Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive (AWD) demonstrated significant improvements over its predecessor, challenging perceptions of what constitutes a mere “refresh” in the automotive world.

Out of Spec team designed a straightforward yet revealing test:

  • Both the new and previous-generation Model 3 Long Range AWD were fully charged
  • Vehicles were driven at a constant highway speed of 70 mph
  • The test continued until both cars were completely discharged

Results:

Previous-generation Model 3 AWD:

  • Range: Approximately 300 miles
  • Adjusted estimate (accounting for battery degradation): 310 miles

Reengineered Model 3 AWD:

Even after adjusting for battery degradation in the older model, the new Model 3 traveled an impressive 60 miles further than its predecessor.

The test was supported by a Tesla Cybertruck, which stood ready to recharge the vehicles once they ceased operation on the roadside.

Kyle Conner, one of Out of Spec Studios’ hosts, emphasized the significance of these results, noting that both vehicles share similar battery and motor configurations. This highlights the impact of Tesla’s refinements in aerodynamics, powertrain efficiency, and overall vehicle optimization.

With the re-engineered Model 3 Long Range AWD proving its exceptional efficiency, attention now turns to the potential performance of the Model 3 Long Range Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) variant. EV enthusiasts eagerly anticipate seeing how this model might push the boundaries of electric vehicle range even further.
