Tesla Plans to Bring Back Turn Signal Stalk to Model 3

After reintroducing the turn signal stalk in the updated Model Y, Tesla is expected to do the same for the Model 3. Chris Zheng, a reliable source on Tesla, shared this news. Tesla mentioned that customer feedback showed a strong demand for the return of the stalk.

Some drivers might prefer the newer turn signal buttons, like those in the Cybertruck. But the Model 3 and Model Y are aimed at average drivers moving from traditional cars. Removing the turn signal stalk was unexpected and not well-received by many.

Turn Stalk

In a recent episode of Jay Leno’s Garage, Lars Moravy, Tesla’s VP of Vehicle Engineering, said Tesla tries to remove unnecessary parts. This time, they went too far by removing the turn signal stalk. Now, they’re bringing it back.

The new stalk in the refreshed Model Y is simpler. It doesn’t have multi-stage signals or extra buttons. It’s just for signaling left and right. Other functions stay on the wheel or screen.

No Right ‘Shifter’ Stalk

Tesla won’t bring back the right stalk, which is used for shifting gears and activating Autopilot. Shifting will stay on-screen or use ceiling buttons near the hazard switch.

Shifting on the dash is easy once you get used to it. AutoShift, still in Beta, might improve this soon.

Autopilot activation stays on the steering wheel. Lars said Tesla didn’t get many complaints about shifting or Autopilot, even with just one stalk.

Retrofit

There’s no news yet on retrofitting 2024+ Model 3s with the turn signal stalk. But it might happen in the future.

Other Models

Will Tesla bring back the turn signal stalk for other models? Probably not. The Model S and Model X, especially with the Yoke steering, feel better without a stalk. Button-based signals fit their design. Future updates might include steer-by-wire instead.

On the Cybertruck, the lack of a stalk isn’t an issue. Steer-by-wire means the squircle steering wheel is always in a good position. After driving it daily, including through roundabouts, the author found the turn signal buttons more intuitive.

Could Tesla offer stalks as an option for those who want them? Maybe. We’ll keep you updated. Do you prefer buttons or a traditional stalk? Let us know.
