Tesla files new hardware tweak for Model 3 in China

Recent filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) show Tesla is adding a front bumper camera to the Model 3. This is a hardware addition that was missing from the Highland refresh launched earlier in 2024.

The Highland update brought changes to the design and interior of the Model 3. But it did not have a front bumper camera. Other Tesla models, such as the Model Y Juniper, already include one.

What the Filings Show

Images from MIIT’s site now show the Model 3 with the new front camera. This leak was first reported by The Tesla Newswire on X.

The new camera will improve use in three ways:

Tesla has been testing new camera setups on the Model 3 for some time. In May 2025, a test car was seen near Boston with extra cameras. Many believe this was for collecting training data. This testing phase likely helped prepare the final design now seen in the MIIT registration.

This change comes as Tesla begins mass production of the Model Y L at Gigafactory Shanghai. Tesla has also registered a new long-range Model 3 that can travel 830 km on the CLTC test cycle.

Adding the front bumper camera brings the Model 3 closer in hardware features to other Tesla vehicles. It also strengthens the car’s hardware base for self-driving technology.
