Tesla’s latest manufacturing facility in Shanghai has reached significant construction milestones, with production scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2025. The facility, dedicated to energy storage solutions, has already achieved 60% completion according to recent reports from IT Home.

Construction of the Shanghai Megafactory officially broke ground on May 23, 2024, and is demonstrating Tesla’s characteristic rapid development pace, with full completion expected in less than a year from the start of construction.

Strategically located in the Lingang area near Tesla’s existing Gigafactory Shanghai, the new Megafactory occupies approximately 49.4 acres. Once operational, the facility is projected to achieve an annual production capacity of 10,000 Megapack batteries, equivalent to 40 GWh of energy storage capability. Tesla has indicated plans to initially operate at a 20 GWh run rate.

The expansion comes at a time when Tesla’s Energy division is showing strong performance, having reported a record-breaking 30.5% gross margin in Q3 2024. This success builds upon the achievements of Tesla’s Lathrop Megafactory, which currently maintains a production rate of 200 Megapacks weekly.

The new Shanghai facility is expected to significantly boost Tesla’s energy storage business once shipments begin in early 2025, further strengthening the company’s position in the global energy storage market.
