Giga Shanghai’s 1 Million Exports: Over 100,000 Teslas Now on Australian Roads

Posted on

Tesla’s Giga Shanghai has reached a significant milestone, exporting 1 million electric vehicles globally since its operations began. Of these, over 107,000 have been shipped to Australia, accounting for nearly 50% of all electric passenger cars in the country, according to data from carloop cited by The Driven.

Tesla’s presence in Australia dates back to 2011 with the original Roadster, followed by Models S, X, and 3 from the Fremont Factory. However, Giga Shanghai became the primary export hub for Australia, supplying Model 3 sedans and Model Y crossovers since April 2021.

The Model Y has particularly excelled in the Australian market, becoming the best-selling EV in 2023 with 28,769 sales. This trend continues in 2024, with the Model Y leading EV sales at 15,199 units, followed by the updated Model 3 at 12,902 units as of August.

Tesla China’s VP Grace Tao commemorated the 1-million-export milestone, highlighting the company’s rapid growth and international recognition in just four years of exporting vehicles.
