Tesla FSD V14 moves to wide release next week per Elon Musk

Tesla will start rolling out FSD version 14 to more vehicles in early October 2025. Elon Musk described this update as the second most significant change for Tesla Autopilot since version 12. FSD V14 aims to make the car act more like a careful driver. Musk said that by version 14.2, the car will “feel almost like it is sentient”.

Release schedule

FSD V14.0 will become available to a wider group of drivers in the first week of October. Version 14.1 is expected about two weeks later. By version 14.2, cars should behave more “alive.” Tesla employees started testing early builds around mid-September. Jason Calacanis described his recent rides in FSD V13 with Hardware 4 as “absolutely perfect”.

Main improvements

The biggest technical change is a jump to a neural network with ten times the parameters compared to earlier versions. This improvement makes the computer process more details, spot new road issues, and respond in a more natural way.

The update also brings better video compression, so the car sees and understands more. Driver prompts, also called “nags,” will happen less often, unless in complicated situations. New features include pothole avoidance, improved parking lot handling, smoother lane changes, and better handling of crowds or police controls.

Driving style

Tesla wants FSD V14 to behave less like a robot. For example, it slows gently at crosswalks, passes bikes with care, and makes lane choices more smoothly. This will help FSD seem “alive,” but drivers are still in charge.

Hardware needs

FSD V14 only works on vehicles with Tesla Hardware 4. Cars with Hardware 3 will not be able to use it because of the higher computing requirements.

Robotaxis in Austin and other areas are still using a system based on FSD V13, not V14, so customers who get V14 may notice better self-driving performance than robotaxi services.

FSD V14 puts Tesla in a leading position for natural, camera-based autonomous driving. Other companies use different sensors or systems. This update helps Tesla’s cars behave more naturally and may lower costs. Broad release for all customers will probably take place near the end of 2025 or early 2026, after extra testing in October and November.
