SpaceX drops Starlink prices in US

SpaceX lowered the price of its Starlink satellite internet for new customers in parts of the United States. Some places now list the Standard Kit at $89. The price was $349 earlier, and just last year it reached $599. People signing up in select areas get one year of internet for $59 a month, the usual rate was $120 per month.

Who gets the new deal

Discounts only apply in regions with extra network space. Customers in crowded zones pay higher fees and could face congestion charges up to $1,000. Only new sign-ups qualify. Current users do not get the price cuts. If someone cancels or changes their plan, the lower price doesn’t continue after the first year. The Standard Kit comes with the Starlink dish, modem, and necessary cables.

The cheaper plan is called Residential Lite. It provides slower speeds at the lower price for one year. After that, regular pricing starts. Not every city gets the same rate. Boise has monthly plans at $49 or $59. Cities like Cedar, Utah and San Francisco list higher prices.

SpaceX applied similar deals abroad. People in Argentina, Australia, Canada, Colombia, and New Zealand can get kits for half the previous price. A few regions offer zero hardware fees or lower monthly costs. For example, Sri Lanka’s residential internet costs about Rs. 15,000 (50 USD) a month. The hardware there runs about Rs. 118,000 (390 USD).

Why SpaceX is making changes

SpaceX is offering lower prices to attract more users before competitors like Amazon Kuiper start. Starlink already has over 2 million US users. The company spent $17 billion buying spectrum rights from EchoStar. Now, Starlink plans to build a direct-to-cell network, so users will connect phones straight to satellites without needing extra hardware.

Cheaper plans could let more people in hard-to-reach and rural places get online. Starlink covers nearly 100 countries and territories now. Forecasts say the satellite internet market may reach $33.44 billion by 2030. Lower costs and new network moves give SpaceX an edge and make it easier for more people to get internet where standard broadband does not reach.
