Elon Musk recently shared on X that Tesla’s next Full Self-Driving software, FSD V14, will drive better than a person. Musk said, “V14 will be better than human for sure, but I don’t know if it will be 10X. Maybe 2X to 3X. V15 has a shot at 10X.” He wants to keep expectations realistic.
FSD V14 is about to launch, most likely in late September. Early testing is happening with employees and Robotaxi pilots in Austin and the Bay Area. Tesla is planning a public release if everything goes well.
V14 uses a new AI model. It has ten times more parameters than the previous version. More parameters let the system learn from more road data and understand driving details. Tesla improved its video compression, so the system gets clearer images from cameras.
Tesla is also lowering how often the car asks drivers to touch the steering wheel. Musk explained, “Once we confirm real-world safety…the car will nag you much less.” Owners will see fewer warnings when driving with this update.
Driving features in FSD V14
Drivers should see better pothole avoidance, improved parking, and smarter turns. The car will act more human, with a smoother and safer style. Musk said the system “feels sentient.” Only cars with Hardware 4 will get V14, because older Teslas lack the needed hardware.
Tesla’s Robotaxi program is running in Austin and the Bay Area. These vehicles use updated FSD tech. The test area for Robotaxis has grown a lot over the last few months.
Recent safety results
Company data shows FSD is safer than most drivers. Tesla reports one crash per 6.69 million miles with Autopilot, while the US average is one crash for 702,000 miles.
However, Tesla still faces legal cases over FSD and Autopilot crashes. The company knows it has to show safety before releasing unsupervised driving.
FSD V14 comes with a much stronger AI model and smarter driving. Musk thinks it will be a big step up from humans. Tesla owners will deal with fewer steering nags and better driving. The next upgrade, V15, could bring another leap. For now, Tesla is focusing on how V14 works with real drivers and on Robotaxi tests.
