Tesla turns its cars into a haunted house on wheels with Halloween Mode

Tesla began sending Halloween Mode to owners, and the feature comes with software update 2026.38.3. It turns last week’s teaser into a full set of features that reaches well beyond a themed touchscreen, and Tesla closed its announcement with a joke: “Side effects may include neighborhood notoriety.”

Owners can now put a ghost costume on the car’s on-screen avatar, and the parked display switches to a graveyard scene like the one in the teaser.

Trick or Treat Mode

This is the feature most likely to get noticed from the street. Once it is switched on and the owner steps away, the car plays spooky sounds and flickers its lights when visitors walk up. The car records Sentry Mode footage of these encounters, so owners can watch people’s reactions later.

Tesla added a new haunting light show that owners can schedule, along with Halloween wraps and a fresh lock sound. One of the wraps is a black finish covered in white ghosts and bats. Intel vehicles already accommodate custom wraps and lock sounds, so we anticipate these features extending to older cars.

The remote voice feature gives owners a way to scare people from a distance. When the owner speaks into the Tesla app, the car repeats the words in a scary voice of its own instead of the usual robotic tone. Speaking through the car from the app is not new, but the creepy voice is. Tesla rounds out the set with a Photobooth mode that turns the car into a spooky photo backdrop.

Driving visuals with FSD

The theme follows the car onto the road. With FSD active, other vehicles appear in shades of green and pedestrians turn into skeletons, and the owner’s own car appears dressed as a ghoul.

Tesla’s release notes list Halloween Mode as available worldwide and confirm it for Model 3 and Model Y. Model S, Model X and Cybertruck. Intel vehicles still get the core set, which covers the ghost costume, Trick or Treat, the light show, wraps, Photobooth and the remote app voice.

Halloween is just over three weeks away, so we expect 2026.38.3 to reach most owners before trick-or-treaters start knocking. The release note for the mode opens with the line “Spread holiday fear year round,” and that wording hints it will stay available after October.

Other changes in 2026.38.3

The build carries more than Halloween content. Set Arrival Energy lets Model Y owners with AI4 hardware pick a desired arrival energy for any trip from the phone. They open the location tab in the Tesla app, enter a destination and tap Set Arrival Energy, and the feature needs app version 4.58.0 or later. Model 3 and Model Y with AI4 get security fixes too.

The update leaves FSD and the car’s overall operation untouched. It follows 2026.38, which brought updated visuals to older Model 3 and Model Y.

Seasonal software is familiar territory for Tesla. Santa Mode already turns the car into a sleigh on the display, swaps nearby traffic for reindeer, renders pedestrians as elves and plays jingle bell turn signals. The Spring and Summer updates mixed novelty items with useful ownership features, and this one leans more to fun.
