Karen Scarpetta now leads Tesla’s Colombia office. Scarpetta comes from WeWork, where she led operations across South America and Mexico. The firm has hired new staff for sales and support and Tesla aims to grow beyond just selling cars. It plans to create long-term partnerships and looks to add charging stations and service centers as the business develops.
Colombia’s electric vehicle market is growing quickly this year. Tesla enters an arena with strong Chinese competitors, like BYD, who already lead in sales. The government gives buyers tax breaks and incentives for choosing electric cars and Electric Vehicle sales have gone up in 2025.
Charging network
Tesla’s success will depend, in part, on charging infrastructure. However, there are over 138 general EV charging stations with various connector types. Tesla is expected to expand charging options soon in the country. Exact details on launch models and prices are not official yet.
President Gustavo Petro supported Tesla’s arrival with a message online, “Welcome to Colombia, Tesla.” He also encouraged Tesla to help build factories and jobs for electric cars in Colombia. Petro wants more electric cars on Colombian roads, and his administration has set goals and incentives for buyers.
The demo drives are just the start. Tesla plans to announce more, including car prices, model choices, local store locations, and charging station plans.
