Tesla expands live pricing to Supercharger sites

Tesla now has live pricing at 550 Supercharger sites in California, New Jersey, New York, Florida, and Illinois. Prices shift in real time based on how busy each station is. Artificial intelligence updates rates as site use changes.

How live pricing works

This system uses data from occupancy sensors and the Tesla app. Prices rise when charging stations fill up, fall when fewer drivers are plugged in. The price stays the same throughout charging, so drivers know what they will pay before starting.

Tesla first checked the system at ten sites. Now it’s live at hundreds. The goal: keep the average price steady while lowering the number of drivers who pay peak rates. Busy times cost more; empty stations cost less. Tesla says its average prices are still about 30% lower than competing networks in Europe and North America.

Pilot sites with on-peak/off-peak pricing based on live Supercharger utilization:

In 2025, Tesla’s Supercharger network grew by 18%. The current worldwide stall count is near 74,000, after adding 3,500 new stalls in the last quarter. Many stations now have new V4 cabinets that deliver up to 500 kW.

Why Tesla uses live pricing

AI lets Tesla change prices quickly as station use changes. This makes charging fairer for everyone, and also decreases rush-hour congestion. Lower prices during slow times encourage more users to charge off-peak.

Tesla says it listens to feedback. The company will keep making changes based on what it finds at these 550 locations and how customers react.

What it costs to charge

The price per kilowatt-hour usually falls between $0.23 and $0.35 in quiet hours, up to $0.40–$0.50 when it’s really busy. These prices may change by site, time, and demand.

Other networks are testing similar systems, but Tesla’s approach stands out because it mixes steady prices and high reliability. As electric vehicles become common, Tesla wants smart pricing to make charging easier and keep costs low for as many drivers as possible.
