Tesla just started rolling out its Full Self-Driving software to cars in Lithuania. This makes the Baltic nation the second country in Europe to allow the driver-assistance system on public streets. The Netherlands was the first to do so, and regulators in Europe historically move slower than those in the United States.
Tesla announced the news on its regional social media channels, stating that “FSD Supervised” is now available to owners there.
Following the Dutch lead
Lithuanian authorities looked closely at the regulatory foundation set by the Dutch vehicle authority RDW. That agency granted Europe’s initial approval for the software earlier this year.
Instead of waiting for one massive European Union approval, Tesla is building acceptance country by country. Lithuania made its decision just weeks after the Dutch move. Indeed, observers expect other countries to follow suit soon.
The long game for artificial intelligence
FSD handles steering, lane changes, braking, and acceleration in everyday traffic. Frankly, Tesla views the software as a core part of its artificial intelligence strategy, and executives argue these capabilities will turn into a major revenue stream through subscriptions and direct purchases. Perhaps it proves the automaker is committed to pushing its software into strict regulatory environments. Authorities want clear evidence regarding driver behavior and overall safety before allowing wider use.
The branding might say Full Self-Driving, but the software is not actually autonomous. Actually, experts classify the current version as a Level 2 driver assistance system. A human must watch the road and intervene the moment conditions change or the software falters.
Competition in intelligent driving systems keeps growing globally, and automakers invest heavily in AI navigation alongside active safety features. Governments have to balance new tech innovation with basic road safety, so this latest approval gives us a hint about how European nations plan to manage assisted-driving features.
