Tesla and SpaceX announce 16.8 billion chip plant in Texas

Tesla and SpaceX shared a new rendering of their planned semiconductor factory today. The companies are building the facility in Grimes County, Texas, and they call the project Terafab.

They plan to manufacture advanced computer chips there to help fix the gap between current global supplies and future hardware needs. The combined demand from both companies is expected to top 1 terawatt of compute, and that amount is currently larger than the entire global supply. The companies appreciate their current suppliers and encourage them to produce more, but the looming shortage remains the main reason Terafab is being built.

Vertically integrated design and output

The blueprint calls for a vertically integrated factory with more than 100 million square feet of space, and the companies will handle the manufacturing, packaging, and testing of advanced logic and memory devices all in one spot. Doing everything in one location helps them make fast improvements and build new processors faster. The factory will turn out edge computing and inference chips when hardware like the Optimus robots and autonomous Cybercabs go into full production. Domestic manufacturing and local impact

Water usage and environmental planning

The companies say they take environmental protection seriously. The factory will use industrial water from the Gibbons Creek Reservoir instead of pumping from local groundwater reserves. They are planning on-site wastewater treatment facilities to help with water reuse and conservation. They aim to manage hazardous materials and industrial byproducts safely, and they plan to meet or exceed all pollution control laws.
