New rumors tease an early US announcement for the Tesla Model Y L

A new rumor about the long-wheelbase Tesla Model Y L appears to have started on Reddit this week. A reddit user posted a screenshot in a reddit community with the title “Model YL coming in July (supposedly)”. The post included a text message exchange showing an apparent sales contact who claimed the larger SUV would come out on July 2 or 3.

The Model Y L is a longer version of the popular SUV, and it features a stretched wheelbase with three rows of seating. Inside the cabin, the car fits six people in a two-two-two seat layout. Then, Chinese filings from mid-2025 state the body is about 180 to 190 millimeters longer than the standard version. Later, Tesla gave the car a slightly higher roof to give third-row passengers extra head room. Before the launch, company representatives called it a luxury all-purpose SUV on Chinese social media ahead of the fall release last year.

The new model runs on a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, and it uses batteries from LG Energy Solution. The vehicle earned a 751-kilometer rating on the Chinese testing cycle. That translates to an estimated 575 to 590 kilometers under American testing standards. Now, this range increase gives buyers a clear upgrade over the current North American model. Tesla built this car for families who outgrew the standard five-seat model but want something cheaper than a Model X.

International rollout and testing progress

Tesla started handing over the keys to Chinese buyers in September 2025, and the vehicle quickly moved to other regions. Soon after, regulators cleared the car for sale in Europe and several Asia-Pacific markets. Today, Australia and New Zealand are next in line to get the six-seater.

Recently, photographers spotted a camouflaged test car charging and driving on public roads in South Korea. Regulators there certified the SUV with a combined range of 553 kilometers at room temperature, and cold weather testing resulted in a 454-kilometer rating. Local analysts expect South Korean sales to start in the second quarter of 2026.

North American production timeline

The July rumor clashes with current United States production estimates. Instead, industry experts expect a much slower rollout in North America, and AutoForecast Solutions analysts anticipate American production will begin around September 2026. First customer deliveries would happen later in the year or early in 2027 based on that schedule. Some observers think Tesla wants to wait until its full self-driving software matures before launching a higher-priced family vehicle in the local market.

Meanwhile, signs of life at the Fremont factory popped up late last month when photographers saw a camouflaged prototype testing near the California facility. This sighting confirms the company is actively testing the vehicle on American soil right now. Earlier reports mentioned unpainted bodies at the Texas plant, and prototypes drove on local highways.

A full retail launch with August deliveries would completely defy current forecasts. We have not seen any public filings from American environmental or safety regulators for the six-seat vehicle yet. So far, Tesla has not added the car to its online store, and executives have not made public promises to investors.

But what exactly is the company planning for the American market? The automaker could use early July for a different kind of update. The company might open reservations and share pricing details without promising immediate deliveries. Another possibility is a software-focused event where executives present the larger vehicle as a future robotaxi for families. This would help Tesla build interest without disrupting its current 2026 or 2027 production timeline.

Until official news drops, the July date shared on Reddit remains just a community rumor. The vehicle is real, and it is driving on roads in multiple countries right now. Production is growing, and American testing is underway. We will just have to wait and see what the company decides to share this summer.
