93-year-old grandma’s Tesla Model Y with FSD is changing her life

Many people assume that reaching your 90s means handing over the car keys for good. Dan Doyle’s mother is proving otherwise, and she’s doing it beautifully.

In a heartwarming video shared on Dan Doyle’s Family Channel, a 93-year-old grandmother took her brand-new Tesla Model Y equipped with Full Self-Driving (FSD) for a solo spin through San Diego County, relaxed, and completely in control.

The drive that said it all

The outing began with a 13-mile trip to Mission Valley Christian Fellowship, with the Tesla navigating turns, traffic, and intersections with smooth precision, arriving on time at 10:30 a.m. Along the way, Dan and his mother shared playful banter. He jokingly told the car, “Hey, if the worship isn’t good, could you go a little slower?” to which the Tesla’s built-in Grok voice (named Ara) replied with humor, “Nice one. Hope the worship rocks so we don’t have to slow down.” His mother immediately laughed and said, “I love that lady.”

After the service, the pair crossed the iconic Coronado Bridge to take in the stunning coastal views. Despite the busy Sunday crowds and tricky parking, the Tesla autonomously navigated the congestion, found a parking space, and handled the return journey to Dan’s home, all without a single disengagement. They celebrated with gelato. When Dan asked, “Life is good, right Mom?” – her bright smile said it all, “Life is good.”

When asked how one of her recent solo drives went, the 93-year-old offered the highest possible compliment for an autonomous vehicle, “Uneventful.”

As Dan shared publicly, “Although she has always been a good driver, my mom can now drive without the fear or fatigue that can naturally come with age. No more relying on others for every trip. No more feeling stuck. This is true mobility that can spark new adventures in a still adventurous woman!”

Dan later confirmed on his X account that his mother still holds a valid driver’s license and owns two other vehicles, she simply chose the Tesla for the freedom and peace of mind it provides. She lives in Encinitas and continues to drive independently.

The tech behind the freedom

The vehicle runs Tesla’s FSD version 14, the most capable iteration of the system to date. According to independent tracking data cited by Piper Sandler analysts, FSD v14.1.x delivered a 20-fold improvement in miles between critical disengagements, jumping from 441 miles in the prior version to over 9,200 miles. Tesla’s own safety report states that vehicles operating with FSD (Supervised) are nearly twice as safe as human drivers in North America across all road types.

Complementing FSD is Grok, the AI assistant from xAI integrated directly into Tesla’s infotainment system. Grok acts as a natural language navigation co-pilot, allowing drivers to set destinations, adjust routes mid-trip, and discover points of interest using plain conversational speech, without needing to tap a screen. For older drivers who may find touchscreen navigation cumbersome, this is a genuinely practical upgrade.

Tesla’s FSD is currently available in the U.S., Canada, China, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. Elon Musk has stated that unsupervised FSD, which would not require any driver attention at all, is expected to roll out nationwide across the U.S. and in most countries by the end of 2026. If that milestone is reached, stories like this 93-year-old’s joyful drive to church may become the norm rather than the exception.

One grandmother in San Diego has shown the world what the future of mobility can look like, and it looks like gelato on a sunny afternoon, with zero disengagements, and a smile that says life is good.
